Chiropractic is a form of healthcare
that offers relief from back pain, neck pain, joint and muscle pain,
headaches, and many other painful conditions. "Chiropractic" comes
from the Greek word chiropraktikos, meaning "effective treatment by
hand". Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts based upon the
understanding that good health depends, in part, upon a normally
functioning nervous system (especially the spine and the nerves
extending from the spine to all parts of the body).
Chiropractic stresses the idea that the
cause of many disease processes begins with the body's inability to
adapt to its environment. It looks to address these diseases not
by the use of drugs and chemicals, but by locating and adjusting a
musculoskeletal area of the body that is functioning improperly.
The nerves in your spine control and
coordinate the health and the functions of your body. Your spinal
column is made up of 24 bony segments called vertebrae, aligned and
connected by a series of joints, ligaments, and muscles. Nerve
messages from the brain flow through your spinal column to the various
organs and other parts of the body.
Slight misalignment of the vertebrae,
called subluxation, “pinches” the nerves and blocks the normal flow of
messages, causing specific areas of the body to become diseased.
When your spine is adjusted, the misaligned vertebrae are placed back
into proper position, relieving pressure on nerve impulses to again flow
normally to the affected area.
